“NVIDIA_DEV.1B84 = “NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB”(1B84=GP104)
First and foremost, this is not a GTX 1060 Ti or anything that would essentially be faster than of the GTX 1060 models. The new card will be based on Pascal GP104-140 GPU, and it will be sold as GeForce GTX 1060 3GB. That’s all we’ve learned over the past few days.
What we don’t know is exact CUDA core count and width of a memory bus. Those cards could very well have more than 1152 working CUDA Cores (number of cores in 1060 3GB), but they will be disabled through BIOS.
What NVIDIA is trying to do here is to sell any GP104 chip that did not meet GTX 1080/1070 or 1070 Mobile specifications. This means any chip that did not have 1920 working CUDA Cores. For NVIDIA those chips are considered as defective and cannot be sold as GTX 1070/1080. So the only solution was to remarket them as GTX 1060. Those cards will most likely have higher power requirements than normal GP106-based GTX 1060’s. For such reason, to avoid any ambiguity with power-efficiency claims they will not be advertised worldwide. From what’ve heard those cards could be China-exclusive.
So to be clear, this is not a rumor, we just don’t know all the details yet. In fact, there’s even a new entry in the latest driver, revealing the ID of this card (1B8_ family means GP104):
NVIDIA_DEV.1B84 = “NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB”
