Radeon HD 6970 is 10 - 20% faster than GTX 480

AMD has talked to some of itsfavourite journalists and wants to prepare them for the European Cayman launch that should take place on December 15th, exactly sevendays from now. Some of the lucky ones got the cards that they are testing them as we speak, while partners should have the cards ready to ship early next week. We got a hint about the performance, and we will settle for that. AMD's own benchmarketing data claims that Cayman XT is slightly below 20 percentfaster than a GTX 480 in 3Dmark Vantage. When we compare our own GTX 480 results and add 20 percent on top of that it turns that Cayman XT loses to both GTX 570 and especially GTX 580. It looks like AMD has big gains versus GTX 480 in all OpenGL games including ET Quake Wars, Wolfenstein MP and Chronicles of Riddick, quite old games if you ask us. It is around 20 percent faster than the GTX 480 in these games. In HAWX 2 Radeon HD 6970 is some 15 percent faster than the GTX 480, and in Dirt 2 it is over 15 percent faster. When we compare the scores we have with this game and GTX 480 and add additional 15 percent we don’t see it beating the GTX 580, but it gets close. The smallest gain is in Far Cry 2 with only a few percent faster than GTX 480, following with World in Conflict where ATI is below 10 percent faster and Metro 2033 where ATI wins by slightly over 10 percent, again vs GTX 480. There might be some cases where Radeon HD 6970 will beable to beat the GTX 580, butthe first impression is thatNvidia should end up slightly faster in most games. Update: It appears that our usually well informed source failed us, and forwarded a photoshopped roadmap. So, we plainly got served. We are inthe process of gathering more reliable info on Caymanperformance and we will write an update as soon as we get something worthwhile. It will clearly end up quitea bit faster and we apologize for the inconvenience.

Radeon HD 6970 runs at 880MHz

We got some official data about AMD's Radeon HD 6970 card codenamed Cayman XT. The card runs at 880MHz and the card has the memory thatruns at quite impressive 5.5GBps. The memory of choiceis GDDR5 in 256-bit flavour and the card has 2GB of it. The card has 96 texture units, as well as 24 SIMD and1536 ALU streaming processors. It has 32 ROPs and 128 Z stencils. Cayman Radeon HD 6970 uses VLIW4  Shader Architecture something that Bobo explain in details here . We can confirm this story today. Total compute power of Cayman in this version is 2.7TeraFlops under IEEE754-SP standard and 675 GigaFlops with IEEE754-DP standard. It is unknown if the card is slower of faster than the GTX 580 but this given presentation didn't really look into it. The indication is that Cayman won't be faster than GF110 products, but in this presentation, ATI didn't show any Radeon HD 6970 performance data.

Cayman is a 2.64 billion transistor chip

Cayman, Radeon HD 6970 and 6950 cards will have a 389 square millimetre core that packs 2.64 billion transistors. Nvidia’s GT110 chip the oneresponsible for Geforce GTX 580 and 570 is a massive 520 square millimetre core and has some three billion. AMD’s chip is some 30 percent smaller in size and it has some 15 percent fewertransistors than Nvidia’s which is impressive. In the end Nvidia looks like a slightly faster solution, but its core is bigger. Nvidia’s chip is more complex and more expensive to produce. It ends up with better shader performance, but overall AMD did a good job of making something thatis close to the GTX 580 in terms of performance and significantly faster than the now obsolete GTX 480, allwith fewer transistors in a smaller package. The chips are ready and the cards will be available on Tuesday the 15th of Decemberin Europe and in the US in the night of 14th of December. We are not sure about the price as AMD will finalize its pricing literally at the last minute, but we guess it will be less than Nvidia wants for GTX 580 and the recentlyintroduced GTX 570.

Radeon HD 6970 has 250W PowerTune Maximum Power

PowerTune Maximum Power is something that we’ve mentioned yesterday and disclosed that AMD claims less than 300W TDP for its high end Cayman part. Things are a bit better as the PowerTune Maximum Power is claimed to sit at acceptable 250W. AMD also tells its partners and pressthat the typical gaming power is expected to be 190Wwhile the typical idle poweris a quite nice 20W. The big issue is how do you define and compare Power Tune maximum power with something that we are familiar with, eg. TDP, but wewill have some answers afterwe test the power of these cards in our own environment. Cypress XT, Radeon HD 5870 had 188W TDP and 27W in idle, which means that the load got much worse, but idle consumption is better. The funny part is that the new chip has 1536 shader, some 64fewer than the Radeon HD 5870, which has 1600. We suspect that some things gotdisabled at Cayman for the sake of better yields.
